Good post, all very good points. I was probably too easy on the site. Or rather, I focused on the potential instead of the here and now. Hopefully they incorporate your feedback!

Also – what you’re talking about with the signup thing is called “gradual engagement”. http://www.alistapart.com/articles/signupforms

Even better – remove the need to register at all. Use my credentials from somewhere else, such as Facebook!

Wow, frustrating. If I happened upon that site in a different way, I would probably have assumed it was for a closed group or club, not for me.

As you nicely stated, heart in the right place, poor execution. Bureaucracies have a tough time getting out of their own way.
